  1. Background

    Big data is becoming more and more important in the operation of the national economy, and it has already had a fundamental, global and revolutionary impact on economic development, social life and national governance. In 2020, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and Illinois Institute of Technology jointly established a Sino-foreign Joint Programs of Computer Science and Technology (Big Data), which makes CUG to become one the first key universities in China to engage in Sino-foreign cooperation in big data. The Sino-foreign joint program has been equipped with enough experienced teachers from China and the United States, advanced teaching and training system, and perfect experimental teaching environment. In addition, CUG has established the ICT Academy with Huawei, to jointly cultivate innovative talents in the field of big data.

  2. Objectives

Facing the needs of national economic construction and social development, The Sino-foreign joint program determines to cultivate big data talents with good scientific literacy, international perspective, professional ethics and social responsibility. Graduates should be familiar with solid computer theories on software and hardware, as well as advanced data science theories and processing methods, capable of developing big data system used for computing and analysis, equipped with strong engineering practice ability and innovation awareness, and able to engage in big data system construction, big data understanding and calculation, big data analysis and application in government, enterprises, institutions, national defense and other units.

  1. Requirements

    The program attaches importance to the cultivation of computational thinking ability and big data system construction ability, emphasizing the understanding from mathematical logic to uncertainty thinking. It also focuses on fusion technology learning in big data processing, such as diversity computing power fusion technology, stream batch processing fusion technology, data and artificial intelligence fusion technology. Students are required to have a deep understanding and practical ability of system construction, algorithm models, and applied reasoning for big data processing.

  2. Courses

    Professional courses are mainly related to big data systems, big data computing, and big data analysis, mainly include: programming paradigms and patterns, system programming, mathematical modeling, discrete mathematics, data structures, operating systems, computer networks, computer composition principles, Data preparation and analysis, parallel and distributed computing, high performance computing, database organization, multivariate statistical analysis, computational vision, machine learning, deep learning, computer and society, artificial intelligence, spatiotemporal big data analysis and application, medical big data analysis and Applications, business big data analysis and applications.

  3. Faculty and Talent Training

    The Sino-foreign joint program has been equipped with enough experienced teachers from China and the United States. There are 18 teachers in China, including 3 professors, 3 doctoral supervisors, 1 China's national outstanding young talents, 1 Hubei Innovation Hundred Talents, and 1 Chutian Scholar in Hubei Province. The proportion of Chinese teachers who have obtained a doctoral degree has reached 95%, and more than 60% of the teachers have experience in studying and communicating with famous foreign universities. There are 48 teachers in the Department of Computer Science of the Illinois Institute of Technology, including 15 professors and 21 associate professors, all of whom have PhDs.

  4. Research and Social Services

    In the past three years, the school of computer science of CUG has undertaken and completed more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial projects including national key research and development plans, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with a cumulative research funding of 30 million yuan. Teachers have published more than 100 papers in authoritative computer journals and important academic conferences, including 11 highly cited papers; officially published 5 monographs, won 6 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements second prizes, and obtained more than 10 national invention patents. The school has hosted the National University Mobile Internet Application Development and Innovation Competition for three consecutive years, undertaken the application and evaluation of the Chinese University Industry-University-Research Innovation Fund for two consecutive years, and hosted the International Conference on Big Data for Geosciences for four consecutive times.
