Overview

China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) was founded in 1952 as a national key university directly under the administration of Ministry of Education. It is one of the first batch of universities with graduate school, enrolled in project ‘211 for Higher Education’, and involved in ‘double first-class discipline university’ plan of Chinese Ministry of Education.

School of Computer Science, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) was founded in 1985. Now there are 98 full-time faculties in the school. All the faculties are highly educated with high profession. There are 16 Ph.D. supervisors, 18 professors, 53 associate professors, and 27 lecturers in the school. Many faculties are with national title and honors. One professor is granted by the ‘National Outstanding Youth Fund’. One professor is elected in the national talent plan.  Also, three faculties were granted by Hubei Provincial Outstanding Youth Fund. There are also two ‘Hubei Innovation Groups’ in the school.

After more than 30 years of construction and development, the school currently provides the doctoral program in Geosciences and Information Engineering, the master programs in Computer Science and Technology, Information Security, and Geosciences Information Engineering and Electronic Information (Computer Technology Field). Undergraduate programs cover six majors including computer science and technology, information security, network engineering, spatial information and digital technology, data science and big data technology, and intelligent science and technology. Among the aforementioned majors, ‘Computer Science and Technology’ was selected as the first-class degree program of national construction. ‘Network Engineering’, ‘Information Security’, and ‘Spatial Information and Digital Technology’ became ‘Pilot Projects of Professional Comprehensive Reform’ of the Ministry of Education. ‘Computer Science and Technology’, ‘Network Engineering’ and ‘Spatial Information and Digital Technology’ were selected as undergraduate programs of Hubei Province’s universities for talent development plan of strategic emerging (mainstay) industry.

In recent years, much breakthrough has been made in disciplinary construction. The major of Computer Science and Technology was assessed as Class-B in the National Discipline Assessment in 2017 by the Ministry of Education, ranking in the top 20%-30% of the whole country. In Nov. 2017, China University of Geosciences was listed in the top 1% of ESI for the first time in global institutions of computer science field. In Nov. 2019, the computer discipline of China University of Geosciences was listed in the top 5‰ of ESI in global institutions of computer science field. In USNews World University Rankings of 2019, the computer discipline ranks 97th in the world. In Dec. 2019, the major of computer science and technology was selected as the first-class undergraduate degree program of national construction.

The research expertises include data mining, artificial intelligence, big data, computer vision, network engineering, network security, spatial information processing, etc. In the past five years, more than 40 projects have been granted by National Science Foundation of China, National Eey R & D Program, and National Science and Technology major projects, including 2 key projects of NSFC, 3 National Defense High-Tech projects, and 1 National Defense Science and Engineering Bureau key project, with a total project funding of over 100 million RMB. The School of Computer Science has published more than 10 academic monographs and over 200 SCI papers with 20 papers as highly cited paper of ESI. It won the third prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of Hubei Provincial Technology Invention Award, the first prize of Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Excellent Teaching Achievements of Hubei Colleges and Universities, and many other awards.

It has established Hubei Key Laboratory of Intelligent Geo-information Processing and Hubei Provincial Engineering Technology Center of Intelligent Geological Resources and Environment Technology, As the co-construction affiliation, the school involves the construction and operations of the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Land and Resources of Resource Quantitative Evaluation and Information Engineering, the Research Center of the Ministry of Education of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of the Yangtze River and the National Engineering Technology Research Center of Geographic Information System.

The school has always adhered to the philosophy of 'openness, competition and collaboration'. Adhering to the development policy of combining production, learning, and research, the school has established a number of university-industry-institute union bases with many famous companies, such as CASC (China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation), SASTIND (State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense), The 54th Research Institute of CETC (China Electronics Technology Group Corporation), The 709th Institute of CSIC (China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation), Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, NSFOCUS, Amazon, etc.

In recent years, the school has continued to improve the undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship system based on project support, team implementation, competition testing and academic integration. Over the past few years, the college has hosted a series of high-level technology competitions including The 2nd, 3rd, 4th National College Mobile Internet Application Development Innovation Comtest (MIAC), College ACM Invitational Tournament (Central China). In addition, college students participate in a series of domestic and international high-level events, such as International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), RoboCup China Open, National Computer Simulation Grand Prize, National College Student Information Security Contest, National Undergraduate Electronics Design Contest, National College Mobile Internet Application Development Innovation Comtest, etc.

In the past 3 years, the students of the school have achieved significant improvement in innovation ability, and they have won prizes in many domestic competitions. Up to now, our students have won a total of 62 provincial or higher awards and 48 national or higher awards. Among them, there are 1 first prize and 1 winning prize at the international level, 6 first prizes, 20 second prizes, 19 third prizes at the national level, and 3 first prizes, 1 second prize, 7 third prizes at provincial level.

In terms of scientific research projects, the college has carried out a lot of teaching work. And in the past three years, the college students have obtained 283 scientific research projects including 5 Institute level scientific research projects, 18 university level basic scientific research training projects, 40 university students' innovation and entrepreneurship training programs, 27 university students' Independent Innovation Program projects, which  benefits more than 500 students.

The school of computer science actively carries out extracurricular academic competition activities to improve students' scientific research ability and explores the new mode of training IT talent to cultivate more innovative talents. The average employment rate of college graduates is 98.43%. The graduate employment ratio always achieved 100% in the last six years.

We firmly hold an open and positive attitude towards the cooperation with both domestic and international partners, and continuously enhance the bilateral academic activities specially with the top universities and research institutions home and abroad. Moreover, we provide our students rich opportunities to widen their global outlook and promote their competence of international communication with various international exchange programs. Every year a variety of well-known professors, scholars, and experts from many other countries and regions, including the US, the UK, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, China, and so on, are invited to our school to present academic lectures. Nowadays, two documents named by ‘Financial Support and Regulation (trial) to International Exchange and Cooperation Program for Undergraduates at CUG-CS’ and ‘Agreement on Studying Aboard with Financial Support from CUG-CS’ have been released to encourage, instruct, and also regulate all undergraduate candidates to take part in international exchange programs. Specifically, a ‘3+2’ international exchange program cooperatively-run with The University of Aizu, Japan, has already been successfully carried out since 2019. During recent decades, our international exchange programs have funded hundreds of students to study oversea at the University of Waterloo, the University of Montana, the Monash University, and so on.

We achieve profound faculty memberships, and have developed distinctive characteristics of geoscience-based computer science. Our school-wide philosophical belief comes two-fold: meeting the demands in national and social developments and the international frontiers of computer science, while cultivating qualified talents of wide professional view, comprehensive competence, and competitive career capability. It would like to say that CUG-CS is to become a cradle for students to grow, a forge to train their professionals, an arena to develop their outlook on values, a palace to pursue their excrescence in academic.
