The Hubei Key Laboratory of Intelligent Geo-Information Processing was established in December 2014.It is an innovative research institution relying on geology, resources, environment and other traditional dominant disciplines of China University of Geosciences,featuring geoscience applications, and developing theories, methods, and technologies for intelligent information processing in the geosciences. Through comprehensive construction, we strive to make the laboratory a research institution for intelligent information processing, which has distinctive geological characteristics, leading in Hubei Province, domestically advanced, and has international influence.

There are 56 permanent researchers in the laboratory, including 1 "National Expert with Outstanding Contributions", 2 "Chutian Distinguished Professors", 2 "Chutian Chair Professors", 1 Ministry of Education cross-century talent, 1 " Thousand Talent Program for Young Outstanding Scientists ", 2 " Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University", 1 "Provincial Teaching Master", and 1 "Hubei Provincial Hundred Talents Plan". There are 23 professors, including 12 doctoral supervisors. There are 24 young key teachers, including 3 "Chu Tian Students" and 3 "School Cradle Program". The permanent researchers in this laboratory have a high level of education, a reasonable structure of age, academic background and professional orientation, and have a strong research strength in general.

The laboratory has three research directions of "theory-method-system" with distinct levels and mutual support, intelligent geoscience calculation and data mining theory, high-performance geoscience data processing and calculation methods, geological information system and spatial information engineering. The research has a clear division of labor, a reasonable layout, and a clear hierarchy. It has clear geological characteristics, representative applications, and also covers typical information processing methods and theoretical research directions.

The laboratory focuses on intelligent geosciences information processing theoretical method research and geosciences application, interdisciplinary collaboration academic innovation environment, explores new models and mechanisms for team building and basic condition development, and forms a new pattern with multi-directional cross fusion of clear scientific research goals, stable research team, and excellent research equipment, and supporting platforms for the cultivation of high-level talents and team building for this discipline.

The construction goals of the laboratory are to rely on various research projects to explore the basic theories and cutting-edge technologies of intelligent information processing in the geosciences, build a platform for scientific and engineering applications of intelligent information processing, promote the development of intelligent information processing and artificial intelligence disciplines, obtain a group of advanced research results representing intelligent information processing in Hubei Province and China, unite a group of research teams with clear discipline directions, concise research directions, reasonable age levels, and continuous innovation, play an important role in promoting and supporting the development of Hubei Province and China in this field.
