The master's degree program of Geosciences Information Engineering passed the review and evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2013.The Geosciences Information Engineering program is a new interdisciplinary major combining Computer Science, Information Technology and Geological Sciences. It aims at cultivating innovative and creative talents with a special focus on information systems of national Geology and Mineral Resources.

After more than 20 years of exploration, this major established a joint force of academic teams with distinctive research directions. Leading researchers include Professor Wu Chonglong, Professor Cai Zhihua, and Professor Wang Lizhe. Our research areas cover Geoscience Information Processing Technology and System Development, Smart City and Digital Land Engineering, Intelligent Computing and Geoscience Applications, Space Task Design and Dynamic Multi-objective Planning, High Performance Computing and Geoscience Applications, Spatial Information Technology and Big Data in Geosciences. Especially our research of Intelligent Computing, Geosciences Information Engineering, and 3D Geological Information Visualization achieves leading level in China.

In the direction of Intelligent Computing research, the college has published more than 100 international SCI articles, and has held five international conferences on intelligent computing and its applications. More than 100 international SCI articles have been published in the filed of intelligent computing and five international conferences on intelligent computing and its applications were held during the past 5 years. In the direction of Geographic The Information System research team developed the first large-scale Geosciences Information Engineering software which has been widely used in major information systems of national land resources and rescue systems a series of "Shenzhou" spacecrafts. The project "Development and Application of Geological and Mineral Point Source Information System" by 3D Geological Information Visualization team reached the international advanced level. They also designed a 3D geological visualization information system platform, QuantyView, with full and independent intellectual property,

The faculty includes one National Distinguished Youth , one National Expert with Outstanding Contribution, one Ministry of Education Cross-Century Talents, two New Century Talents Program of the Ministry of Education, and two Chutian Scholars Distinguished Professors, two Chu Tian scholar lecture professors, one Hubei Province Famous Teacher, one Hubei Province One-hundred Talent Program. The department has one Provincial Innovation Group of Hubei, Hubei Key Laboratory of Intelligent Geoscience Information Processing, and more than 10 professional laboratories (Spatial Data Management, 3D Geosciences Modeling, Spatial Analysis, Intelligent Computing, Network Engineering, Information Security, High-performance Computing Laboratory, etc.), There are more than 200 important equipments such as high-performance computers, graphics workstations and servers.

The research teams have received more than 40 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National High-tech R&D Program, and the National Science and Technology Major Project, including 2 National Natural Science Funds, 1 National Defense Science and Technology Bureau Key Project, and 3 National Defense High-Tech Projects within the past 5 years. The total amount of funding is near 100 million yuan. More than 200 SCI papers have been published with the first or corresponding authorship, including 10 ESI highly cited papers. The major was ranked in the range of 301--400 in the ranking list of Academic Ranking of World Universities by in 2018. The U.S.News & World Report ranked us as 147th of the world, and 30th among Chinese universities.

The department has always adhered to the philosophy of "Open, Competitive, and United". It has established extensive exchanges and cooperation with internationally renowned universities such as Stanford in the United States. The department pursues the development policy of combining Production, Learning and Research, and has established multiple production, research, and research innovation bases with the Information Center of Ministry of Land and Resources of People’s Republic of China, the China Geological Survey, State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, PRC, and other well-known IT companies.
