1.Background
Big data is becoming more and more important in the operation of national economy. It has a fundamental, overall and revolutionary impact on economic development, social life and national governance. Data science and big data technology major of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) was founded in 2018. China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) is one of the key universities that set up this major earlier. The major has one national outstanding young scholar, one hundred Chinese Academy of Sciences, one hundred Hubei Provincial teachers, etc, holds two powerful scientific research teams with big data application and high-performance computing, provides the most advanced big data experimental teaching environment, and establishes one ICT college with Huawei to train innovative talents in big data field.
2.Objectives
This major is specifically designed and offered in response to the rapidly developing field of data science and the pressing challenges in economic and social development. This major aims to cultivate big data professionals with all-round qualities. The major facilitates students to master solid basic theories of computer software and hardware as well as systematic data science theories and methods. This major motivates students to find practical and innovative solutions to society's challenges by using their knowledge in data science to develop and analyze big data applications. This major is structured to equip students with an integrated application of knowledge in big data technology in the key industries of financial services, government services, manufacturing, healthcare, national defense etc.
3.Requirements
This major attaches great importance to the cultivation of computing thinking ability, emphasizes the understanding from mathematical logic to uncertain thinking, focuses on the ability training of big data system, attaches great importance to the integration technology in big data processing, such as diversity computing power integration, stream batch integration, data and artificial intelligence integration. This major requires students to have profound cognitive and practical abilities in system construction, algorithm model, application reasoning, etc. for big data processing.
4.Courses
Courses related to big data systems, big data analysis and processing engineering projects are covered as follows: Data Acquisition and Preprocessing, Big Data Platform and Applications, Big Data Storage and Management, Data Visualization, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, High Performance Computing, Multivariate Statistics and Analysis, Deep Learning,Big Data Analysis and Application for Geosciences, Big Data Analysis and Application for Medicine, Big Data Analysis and Application for Commerce.
5.Faculty and Talent Training
The major has a strong faculty team. There are eighteen teachers in total, including three professors, three doctoral supervisors,1 China's national outstanding young talents, 1 Hubei Innovation Hundred Talents, and 1 Chutian Scholar in Hubei Province. The proportion of Chinese teachers who have obtained a doctoral degree has reached 95%, and more than 60% of the teachers have experience in studying and communicating with famous foreign universities.The proportion of all teachers who have received doctorates reaches 95%, and more than 60% of them have the experience of further education and exchange in famous foreign universities. The major has two research teams of high-performance computing and big data application. More than 60 master's and doctoral students have been or are being cultivated, most of whom are employed in financial, telecommunication, hi-tech, government and other industries.
6.Scientific research and social services
In the past three years, the faculties have undertaken and completed more than 30 national and provincial level projects, including national key R & D plan, key projects of National Natural Science Fund, National Natural Science Fund, etc., with a total scientific research fund of 30 million yuan. More than 100 papers have been published in authoritative computer journals and important academic conferences, including 11 highly cited papers. Five monographs have been officially published, six provincial and ministerial level second prizes for scientific and technological achievements have been won, and more than 10 national invention patents have been obtained. For three consecutive years, it has undertaken the organizing work of the National University mobile Internet application development and innovation competition, the application and evaluation work of the Innovation Fund for industry, University and research in China's universities for two consecutive years, and hosted four international conferences on geosciences big data.
